Jemma and Simon at a Castle, Park, UNESCO site in Europe, Germany, Poland

Muskauer Park is a really beautiful spot. It’s over 700 ha and is partly in Germany, partly in Poland. The palace was owned by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, who was a 19th c. dandy who travelled the world and got really into English landscaped gardens, like at Chiswick house and Warwick castle. This inspired him to transform the grounds at Muskau in a similar way, and it seems this is why it was added to the UNESCO list. Although it is beautiful place, especially when the weather turned good again, but we struggled to understand why it was added to the list – maybe the technology required to landscape like this was really revolutionary for the time? We don’t know, as there was very little information about it. The information about the place was generally really lacking, which was a shame. We had a lovely walk though. It’s a huge park, but only a part is landscaped and the rest if wild and foresty – Pückler ran out of money and couldn’t finish the project!

We made the mistake of paying to for the exhibits in the new castle – really wasn’t worth it. The exterior for this building was really lovely, but the interior was very boring. The castle had largely been destroyed during WWII and rebuilt, so there was not much going on inside, apart from a small exhibition about the travels of Pückler and another small exhibit with watercolour paintings of the palace and grounds.
