Yes, road trips definitely suit me better. Gods how stressful is all this catching buses, making sure you’re on time, discussing with drivers when you don’t know exactly where you’re going, catching planes, waiting and wasting time! Argh, just give me a car and I’ll drive myself where I want to be!
Anyway, in the morning I had to go get my last shot of rabies vaccine. Quite far from downtown, took ages to get there, multiple misunderstandings with bus drivers… but got it, they can bite me as much as they want now. After half day wasted I went to the library to upload some more photos and sort out my India itinerary. Got hardly anything done, because they only offer a PC for an hour and their WiFi seriously kills puppies. Actually, it feels like all of NZ barely came out of the dial-up age, internet here is expensive, unreliable and really slow. I’m now stressing out about stuff largely because although I set aside an entire day to sort out itineraries, I effectively had about an hour for it. I hope Brisbane airport will have WiFi, or I really don’t know if I’ll manage to book any tickets to travel around India on time.
After I arrived to Brisbane it turned out that my connection flight to Singapore is delayed by a mere 6h, meaning a night at the airport. Like I needed more stress. Not just inconvenience – in Singapore I had a connecting flight to Medan which I`m going to miss. Because the flight wasn’t on the same itinerary, the Emirates staff politely told me that it’s my problem and they don’t care that I`m screwed now. I had to book another flight with another airline and hope that travel insurance will cover the costs. More importantly, this delay means another completely wasted day and more plans going to hell: since now I won’t get to Medan until 8PM, I won’t get a chance to shop for some more appropriate clothes and bug repellents. I’ll actually need to get a pretty expensive taxi to get to Bukit Lawang, because at that time there will be no buses. And the chill-out day before a trek to the jungle… ah well, only a good dose of stoicism can save me now. At least I had time to sort out itineraries. Shit happens, live with it.
Anyhow, I have hours to kill now in Singapore airport, and after I arrive I don’t know what my net access will be like. But really hope that that’s the end of stress trips. For now I enjoy the contrast between the Chopin coming out of airport speakers and the machine gun armed soldiers standing next to them. They wouldn’t let me take their photo.
