Simon at a City, Sea in North America, USA

I landed, rented a SUV, ate at Taco Bell and had a Mountain Dew. I’m in the USA all right.

I actually wanted to rent the cheapest car possible, but apparently they upgraded me because that’s all they had available. A 7-seater. The plan is to sleep in the car for the first few days, so I’m not complaining. As I was signing the agreement, I asked what is the excess on the insurance. The guy made big eyes at me: ‘You want insurance with that?’

As I started driving, I noticed condensation on the windscreen. I turned the ventilation on to get rid of it, but it wouldn’t go. I opened the windows, but still, nothing. And then I twigged. It was on the outside. It was the outside of the car that was hot and humid, and I was blowing cold ventilation air from the inside. I just laughed – I really am on holidays!

I landed at 6:30pm, 11:30pm UK time, so the plan was to drive close to the beach and sleep there. Easier said than done. Neither the rental place nor the next couple petrol stations sold maps, and all I got was a rough tourist map from some hotel. The roads are really poorly signed – most signs say only the number of the road, not the destination or distances. And virtually all written signs are in a small super-condensed font that is just unreadable at night. But slowly I made it without major detours. Patience and improvisation are best.

A bridge to the beach, or scape rendering edge?

On the road here I saw more pickup trucks than in the last year in the UK. Also, colonial architecture, pretty much exactly the same as in Australia.

Got to the waterfront, found a quiet parking spot and went for a wander. Ended up lying on the beach for some time, watching shooting stars and listening to the ocean. The water is warm, tomorrow I’m taking a swim at sunrise.
