Waking up by the seaside was wonderful. I thought about going to stretch on the beach, but couldn’t, because it has been eaten by the tide. I just stretched next to the car instead.
After some impromptu breakfast I took off North towards Savannah. The first place I stopped at on the way was the Broadfield Plantation, an old rice plantation house turned into a museum. The fields themselves have long turned into marshes – growing rice here hasn’t been profitable for over a century. But the grounds! What a beautiful place, a white house beautifully situated on green grass amongst huge oaks with beards of Spanish moss and hair of fern. An absolute idyll created on the backs of slaves who worked and died here by the thousands. It was really interesting to see this place and see how its current presentation deals with its past. Incidentally, I haven’t seen a single black person working there.
