Jemma and Simon at a Mountain, Transit in Europe, Italy

Yesterday was murderous! The rain just got worse and worse and soon even the top wiper setting was barely enough. We were hoping we might catch some beautiful views over the Ligurian coast, but we barely ever saw more than 50 metres ahead through the unrelenting rain. At some point a passing lorry threw a massive load of water on the Baron – the one moment in this whole journey I thought we’re gonna die on the road… Thankfully the motorway went through multiple tunnels, giving us some respite from the constant bombardment. The motorway was also prohibitively expensive – almost €50 for some four hours drive!

In pursuit of the perfect percolator, we stopped for the night in Aosta, and went to sleep on a ski resort parking lot, idly wondering whether we might be driving close to Mont Blanc tomorrow.

And then we woke up in the morning and realised we are about 30km from it and will be driving underneath it tomorrow! See the mountain you can’t see in the clouds?
